Paleochori (also spelled Paliochori) is the geothermal star of Milos, a long crescent of coloured sand backed by cliffs streaked in orange, red, ochre and grey - a visible record of the island's volcanic past. In places you can feel warm patches beneath your feet at the water's edge and small columns of hot bubbles rising through the seabed where fumaroles vent from below. There are three main coves connected by a rough path. The main cove is organised with sunbed rentals (roughly 25-35 EUR for a set in 2026) and two long-running tavernas, Sirocco and Pelagos, where dishes are traditionally slow-cooked in the hot volcanic sand. The eastern cove is quieter and shade-free, and the western pocket is popular with snorkellers.

Pro Tip: Ask at Sirocco whether the ammoudia lamb, chicken or gemista is being cooked in the sand that day - the pots go in around 09:00 and come out at lunch. Reserve a table by 12:30 to try it.
