Pura Petitenget is the 16th-century Balinese Hindu temple on the rocky outcrop at the northern end of Seminyak Beach - the spiritual centre of the resort area and one of 6 sea temples (sad kahyangan) along Bali's south-west coast. Named for a magical Hindu chest (petitenget) said to be hidden inside, the temple is small but architecturally important and active during festivals. The compound dramatic at high tide when waves spray the seaward walls.
Visitors are welcome to enter the outer courtyard (with sarong, provided free at the gate) but the inner sanctum is for worshippers. Free admission - donations 10000-20000 IDR welcomed. The Petitenget Temple festival (every 210 days, dates rotate by the Balinese calendar) features colourful processions through the streets to the beach. Open daily 06:00-19:00. Allow 30 minutes.
Pro Tip: Visit at sunset and stay 30 minutes past for the moment the sun drops behind the temple and the rocks below. The Potato Head Beach Club next door has the easiest sunset photo from outside without paying the entry fee.
