Inverleith Row, Edinburgh EH3 5LR, UK
Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, known locally as the Botanics, is the most reliable place to see autumn leaves in Edinburgh. The garden covers 28 hectares a mile north of Princes Street, has occupied the Inverleith site since 1820, and holds a living collection of more than 13,000 plant species. The Chinese Hillside does the heavy lifting in October: acers, birches and rowans planted from expeditions to Yunnan and Sichuan, turning yellow through to deep red above the stream and pond.
Entry to the grounds is free, with donations invited. The garden opens daily at 10am and closes at 5pm through October, dropping to 4pm from November. Most glasshouses are still shut for a long restoration, but the Palm Houses reopened on 2 October after years of work and now take advance bookings. The higher path behind Inverleith House gives the classic view south across the lawns to Edinburgh Castle.
Pro Tip: Arrive at the East Gate on Inverleith Row at 10am and head for the Chinese Hillside first. That buys you an hour of low morning light and an empty path before the Stockbridge dog walkers arrive around 11am.
