Piazza Giordano Bruno, 3, 06024 Gubbio PG, Italy
In the medieval San Martino quarter, a nativity scene with life-size figures winds through the narrow lanes, arches and courtyards, recreating scenes of daily life from the past. Artisans and artists bring characters to life in traditional trades, leading visitors to the central scene of the Nativity.
The nativity has traditionally opened from 8 December, according to listings, and is free to visit. The setting, among stone houses beside the Camignano stream, makes it one of the most atmospheric nativity displays in Umbria.
The quarter is especially beautiful in the evening, when the lanes are softly lit, and it is a highlight of Christmas in Gubbio.
Pro Tip: Visit the San Martino nativity after dark, when the lighting makes the scenes most atmospheric, and look up for glimpses of the illuminated tree on the mountain.
