The polished end of Bavarian cooking, directly opposite the Bavarian State Opera, and the place to eat before a performance. Mains run roughly 23 to 30 euros, with a small Wiener Schnitzel at 23.50 and Niederbayerischer Spanferkelbraten at 28.90, plus a river and lake fish section that most Wirtshauser do not bother with. It is open seven days a week, which in this part of town is unusual.
Understand that this is two restaurants in one building and guests routinely book the wrong one. The rustic ground floor runs daily 11:30 to 00:30 with the kitchen to 23:00. The refined upper floor runs daily 11:30 to midnight, but until 30 August 2026 it opened only from 17:00. Sunday brunch resumes on 11 October 2026. Reserve well ahead on performance nights, and specify which floor.
The trade-offs are opera-district pricing and a certain corporate smoothness: this is a Kuffler group house, well run rather than characterful, and you pay a premium for the address and the view of the Nationaltheater portico. It is also a WirtshausWiesn venue, so the Oktoberfest window brings a reduced festival menu and a very different room. Smart-casual dress is advisable upstairs.
Pro Tip: Book the upper floor at a window on an opera night and eat at 18:00, which gets you the Nationaltheater lit up and out in time for the curtain. If you are not going to the opera, take the ground floor instead: the same kitchen, less money and more atmosphere.
