Spittelberggasse 3, 1070 Wien, Austria
Spittelberg is a small grid of cobbled lanes lined with restored Biedermeier houses, and in Advent the stalls run along Spittelberggasse, Stiftgasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse. Instead of a single square, the market winds through the neighbourhood, so you walk between pastel facades, small bars and shopfronts as you browse. The 2026 dates are 13 November to 23 December.
The stalls focus on crafts and food gifts: ceramics, knitwear, rugs, silver and enamel jewellery, and jars of jam and spirits to take home. The Vienna Tourist Board highlights the local, organic and fair-trade products here, which makes Spittelberg the best Christmas market in Vienna for gifts that are not mass-produced.
It is popular with locals after work, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed, but the narrow lanes get crowded from around 6pm. The MuseumsQuartier and Maria-Theresien-Platz are both a few minutes away on foot.
Pro Tip: Come at lunchtime on a weekday, when the lanes are quiet and the stallholders have time to talk about their work. Pick up a bag of Maroni (roast chestnuts) to eat as you walk the lanes.
