St Michael's Gate (Michalska brana) is the only surviving gate of the medieval city walls of Bratislava, and its 51-metre green-copper tower is the most photographed landmark inside the Old Town. Built in the 14th century as one of four fortified gates, the tower was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1758 with the copper-domed cupola and the golden statue of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon that still crowns it.

Inside is the Museum of Arms (Muzeum zbrani), part of the Bratislava City Museum. Six floors of medieval weaponry, armour, crossbows, muskets and city defence exhibits climb up to the panoramic viewing gallery at the top. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 10:00-17:00, Saturday and Sunday 11:00-18:00, admission 5 EUR. Beneath the gate, a brass compass rose in the cobblestones marks the distances from Bratislava to 29 world capitals. Michalska street below is lined with 18th century townhouses and independent cafes.

Pro Tip: Climb the tower first thing at 10:00 (weekdays) or 11:00 (weekends) for the best view over the Old Town rooftops. On the way down, stop at Cafe Verne in the neighbouring Palugyay Palace at Panska 17 for coffee - the interior is done up like a Jules Verne submarine.
