Rynek Główny, 31-042 Kraków, Poland
The Krakow Szopki are glittering, colourful nativity scenes built in the shape of the city's landmarks, from St Mary's Basilica to Wawel Castle. The tradition was added to UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018, and the annual contest has been held since 1937.
On the first Thursday of December, which in 2026 falls on 3 December, the makers carry their creations to the steps of the Adam Mickiewicz Monument on the Main Square, where they are displayed before judging. The best entries then go on show at the Museum of Krakow in Krzysztofory Palace, usually until February.
Watching the Szopki arrive on the square is one of the highlights of Christmas in Krakow.
Pro Tip: Arrive at the Mickiewicz Monument by late morning on the first Thursday of December to see the Szopki up close before the crowds build. If you miss it, visit the exhibition at Krzysztofory Palace.
