Pura Tanah Lot is a 16th-century Hindu sea temple perched on a rocky outcrop offshore at high tide - one of Bali's most photographed landmarks and a 25 km drive north of Seminyak. The temple is dedicated to the sea gods of the Pasih sea spirits and is one of 7 ocean temples that ring the Balinese coast. At low tide visitors can wade across to the base; the inner sanctum is for worshippers only.
The complex includes the famous main Tanah Lot temple, the smaller Pakendungan temple, and the cliff temple Batu Bolong (with a natural arch through the rock). Sunset is the iconic experience - the light silhouettes the temple against the western sky. Entry 60000 IDR adults. Open daily 07:00-19:00. Half-day trip from Seminyak with private driver around 300000-500000 IDR with waiting time. The drive takes 45-60 minutes each way.
Pro Tip: Time arrival 90 minutes before sunset to walk the cliffs, see the temple from multiple angles, and find a clear spot for the sunset photo. The northern cliff overlook is less crowded than the main viewing terrace.
