Nashville earned the nickname Athens of the South in the 1800s for its concentration of colleges, and the city doubled down in 1897 by building a full-scale plaster replica of the Athenian Parthenon for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. The temporary structure proved so popular that the city rebuilt it in concrete between 1920 and 1931.
