Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve protects one of only two remaining wild populations of the Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana), the rarest pine species in the United States. The reserve covers 2,000 acres of coastal sandstone bluffs, chaparral, and beach, and eight signed trails run through it. The most popular routes are the Guy Fleming Trail (0.7 miles, mostly flat, ocean views), the Razor Point Trail (1.4 miles round trip, moderate, cliff-edge overlooks), and the Beach Trail (1.5 miles round trip, descends to Torrey Pines State Beach). The reserve is open daily from 7:15 AM to sunset. Parking inside the main lot at the top of the hill costs $10 to $25 per vehicle depending on the day and season in 2026 (weekends and summer are highest); free parking is available on the north end of Torrey Pines State Beach with a 20-minute uphill walk to the trailhead. Dogs, drones, food, and beverages other than water are not allowed inside the reserve to protect the plant communities.

Pro Tip: Aim for the first parking window after 7:15 AM or come after 3:00 PM. Midday summer heat on the exposed sandstone can hit 32 degrees Celsius with no shade, and the reserve caps entry at 400 vehicles - once the lot is full, the ranger station turns cars around.
