V Pevnosti, Praha 2-Vyšehrad, Czechia
Vysehrad is the fortress on the rock south of the centre, and it is the one major Prague site that visitors routinely miss. The Basilica of St Peter and St Paul with its neo-Gothic twin spires dominates it, and the adjoining Vysehrad Cemetery holds Dvorak, Smetana, Capek and Mucha. The Rotunda of St Martin, from the 11th century, is among the oldest buildings still standing in the city.
The grounds and ramparts are free and open year-round; only the casemates, the basilica and the gallery charge. The walk along the southern wall gives a long view up the Vltava towards the castle with the whole river bend in autumn colour, and there is usually nobody on it. Allow 90 minutes for the site, longer if the cemetery interests you.
Pro Tip: Leave via the Cihelna Gate on the river side and walk north along the embankment to Naplavka rather than doubling back to the metro. It is 20 minutes downhill beside the water and it links two entries on this list into one afternoon.
