Wai'anapanapa State Park protects a stretch of black-sand coast where lava from Haleakala hit the sea and shattered into jet-black cinder. Honokalani Beach itself is short - about 300 feet - backed by low cliffs and hala trees. Freshwater sea caves at the north end are the setting for the legend of Popoalaea, a Hawaiian princess who hid there from a jealous husband. A coastal footpath runs south along an old lava field to Hana town for those with time.
Out-of-state visitors must reserve entry in advance at gostateparks.hawaii.gov: $10 per person plus $10 for parking. Slots release 30 days ahead and sell out for popular time windows. The park opens 7am to 6pm daily. Do not enter the water when surf is up - waves break directly onto lava shelves, and rip currents pull hard.
Pro Tip: Book the earliest entry window (7am to 10am) - you will beat the Road to Hana tour vans that arrive between 11am and 2pm, and the beach is often empty enough for photos of the black sand against the aqua water with nobody in the frame.
