Stephansplatz 3, 1010 Wien, Austria
The Christmas village on Stephansplatz wraps around St Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), the Gothic church at the heart of Vienna. With around 40 stalls it is mid-sized, and the setting is the draw: the cathedral's patterned roof and 136-metre south tower rise directly above the stalls. It is one of the first Vienna Christmas markets to open, running from 6 November to 26 December 2026.
The stalls focus on products made in Austria, local crafts and gift ideas, plus the usual food and drink. Because it sits on the busiest pedestrian crossing in the city, between Kärntner Strasse and the Graben, it is easy to fit in between other sights rather than as a destination in its own right.
Stephansplatz is also the starting point for the Christmas lights along the Graben and Kohlmarkt, where large chandeliers hang above the street. Walking from here to Am Hof and Freyung takes about 10 minutes.
Pro Tip: Climb the 343 steps of the cathedral's south tower in the late afternoon for a view over the lit-up roofs of the old town, then come down for a Punsch at the market.
