Bergen is Norway's second-largest city and the official gateway to the western fjords. Wedged between seven mountains and a deep-water harbour, it has a compact, walkable centre dominated by the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf - rows of crooked wooden trading houses that have lined the quay since the days of the Hanseatic League.
Beyond Bryggen, Bergen offers a thriving fish market, the funicular up Mount Floyen for the city's best view, and direct access by boat and train to the Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, and the famous Norway in a Nutshell route. The weather is famously wet - rain falls on roughly two of every three days - so locals say a Bergener is born with an umbrella in hand.
