Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion, in 301 AD, and the evidence is everywhere: stone monasteries wedged into gorges at Geghard and Tatev, carved khachkar crosses in remote graveyards, and the 4,000-year-old winemaking tradition rediscovered in the caves of Areni. Yerevan is a pink-tufa city of open-air cafes and late dinners with Mount Ararat filling the skyline across a closed border in Turkey. Hiking, cable cars and Soviet-era oddities fill the space between, and prices remain low by any European standard.

EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passport holders can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days in a year, one of the most generous allowances anywhere. Russian and most CIS citizens can enter with an internal ID. Other nationalities can apply for a straightforward e-visa online or obtain a visa on arrival at Zvartnots airport. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.
May to June and September to October are the best months, with warm days, open mountain passes and the autumn harvest. Yerevan summers are dry but fierce, often above 35°C in July and August, though the highland monasteries and Lake Sevan stay noticeably cooler. Winter is cold and snowy, closing some mountain roads including the route to Tatev at times, but it brings skiing at Tsaghkadzor and very low prices.
Armenia is a safe country for visitors, with very low violent crime and Yerevan comfortable to walk at night. The exception is the border regions with Azerbaijan, where tensions persist and travel is not advised; check your government's current advisory before heading to the far east or southeast of the country. Road conditions and driving standards are the more common practical risk. Standard precautions against petty theft in crowded markets are sufficient elsewhere.
The Armenian Dram (AMD) is the only accepted currency and is a closed currency, meaning you cannot easily buy it before arriving. ATMs are widespread in Yerevan and provincial towns, and exchange offices offer good rates for US dollars and Euros with no commission. Cards work in Yerevan hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, but carry cash for monasteries, rural guesthouses, marshrutka minibuses and markets. Change any remaining dram before leaving.
Most visitors base themselves in Yerevan and take day trips, since the country is compact and nearly everything is within a three-hour drive. Marshrutka minibuses are cheap and reach most towns but run on unpredictable schedules and can be uncomfortable. Hiring a driver for the day is inexpensive and by far the most practical way to combine several monasteries, and rideshare apps such as Yandex Go work well within Yerevan. The Wings of Tatev cable car, the world's longest reversible aerial tramway, is worth building a day around.
