Las Vegas in October: Weather, Pool Season and Shows
Marketing Manager
Las Vegas in October is the sweet spot of the year. The 40°C summer is over, desert nights are cool, and outdoor life opens up again just as the pools start winding down. This guide picks 5 things to do in Las Vegas in October that our other Las Vegas guides do not cover: a lake swim at Boulder Beach, golden aspens on Mount Charleston, a Broadway tour at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, First Friday in the 18b Arts District and the free cactus garden at Ethel M Chocolates. Each entry includes the exact address, transport from the Strip and a Pro Tip.
On Vegas weather in October: highs average about 27°C (80°F), starting in the low 30s and slipping into the low 20s by Halloween, with nights around 14°C (57°F). Rain is rare and the sun shines on most days. Are Vegas pools open in October? Many resort pools and dayclubs stay open into the month with shorter hours, but water and air cool quickly after sunset, and many pool parties wrap up by mid-October.
The list moves from outdoor half-day trips to evening culture. Boulder Beach and Mount Charleston lie in opposite directions from the Strip and each need a car, the Smith Center and the Arts District sit close together downtown and combine well on the first Friday of the month, and Ethel M is an easy morning stop in Henderson.
1Boulder Beach at Lake Mead - Desert Swimming After Pool Season

Lake Mead, created when Hoover Dam blocked the Colorado River in the 1930s, is the largest reservoir in the United States by capacity when full, and Boulder Beach is its most popular swimming spot. After the summer heat passes, the lake water usually stays warm enough for comfortable swimming through much of October, making it a natural alternative once resort pools start cutting their hours.
The beach is gravelly rather than sandy, with clear water, picnic shelters and views across to the River Mountains. Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented nearby, and the paved River Mountains Loop Trail passes close by for cyclists. Entry is covered by the Lake Mead National Recreation Area vehicle pass, about $25 (about €22) for seven days, and historic Boulder City is ten minutes away for lunch.
Pro Tip: Bring water shoes for the pebbles and plenty of drinking water, and check National Park Service water quality alerts before swimming. Midweek visits mean an almost empty beach.
2Mount Charleston - Golden Aspens and Cool Air Above the Desert

Mount Charleston, at 3,633 m (11,918 ft) the highest peak in the Spring Mountains, rises less than an hour from the Strip, and its upper canyons are often 15 to 20°C cooler than the city. In October the aspen groves of Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon turn gold, typically from late September to mid-October, giving Las Vegas a rare dose of autumn colour among pines and limestone cliffs.
The Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway in Kyle Canyon is the place to start, with exhibits, maps and short paths. Popular October hikes include the Mary Jane Falls trail, a steep climb of about 4 km (2.4 miles) return to a seasonal waterfall, and the easier Cathedral Rock trail. Services in the canyons are limited, so pack food and water, and expect the first snow at the highest elevations by late October.
Pro Tip: Go on a weekday, as trailhead parking fills early on October weekends, and bring a warm layer: it can be 10°C at the Gateway when the Strip is 28°C.
3The Smith Center for the Performing Arts - Broadway Tours Downtown

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2012 in Symphony Park, giving Las Vegas a home for touring Broadway musicals, the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre. Its Art Deco design, inspired by the Hoover Dam, and its 2,050-seat Reynolds Hall feel very different from the casino showrooms on the Strip.
October falls early in the Broadway season, so check the schedule for touring productions and orchestra concerts during your dates. Tickets are often cheaper than headline residencies on the Strip, and Cabaret Jazz, a smaller club-style room in the same complex, hosts jazz and cabaret nights. The Discovery Children's Museum sits next door, which helps if you are travelling as a family.
Pro Tip: Choose orchestra centre or first-tier seats in Reynolds Hall for the best sound, and arrive early to see the Art Deco lobby and the bell tower lit up at night.
4First Friday in the 18b Arts District - Galleries, Food Trucks and Local Life

The 18b Las Vegas Arts District, named for the 18 blocks it originally covered, is where Las Vegas shows its local side. On the first Friday of every month, including the first Friday of October, the First Friday festival fills Main Street, Casino Center Boulevard and Charleston Boulevard with galleries, live music, artists' stalls and food trucks from early evening.
October's mild evenings make it one of the best months to go, after the summer heat that keeps crowds small. Outside First Friday, the district is worth a daytime visit for its vintage and antique shops, independent coffee shops, craft breweries and murals. It is a short ride from the Smith Center, so the two combine easily in one evening.
Pro Tip: Arrive around 18:00, before the main crowds, and take a rideshare rather than driving, as parking fills quickly on First Friday.
5Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Cactus Garden - A Free Desert Garden in Henderson

Ethel M Chocolates was founded in 1981 by Forrest Mars Sr. and named after his mother, and its Henderson factory offers a free self-guided tour past viewing windows where you can watch chocolates being made. Next door, the Botanical Cactus Garden covers about 3 acres (1.2 hectares) with more than 300 species of cacti, succulents and desert plants.
October is the ideal month for the garden, when temperatures fall into the 20s and walking among the agaves, barrel cacti and Joshua trees is pleasant rather than punishing. Entry to both the factory tour and the garden is free, and the shop sells chocolate tasting flights. From mid-November the garden is strung with lights for the annual Holiday Cactus Lights, so October offers the last calm weeks before the seasonal crowds.
Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday morning, when the production line is most likely to be running, and allow 45 minutes to walk the garden.

Las Vegas in October: Weather, Pool Season and Shows - FAQ
October is one of the best months in Las Vegas. Daytime highs average about 27°C (80°F), falling from the low 30s at the start of the month to the low 20s by Halloween, and nights drop to around 14°C (57°F). Rain is rare, but desert air cools quickly after sunset, and the Spring Mountains can be 15°C colder than the Strip.
Yes, many are, at least in the first half of the month. Most resorts keep at least one heated pool open year-round, and several dayclubs now extend their season into October, well past the old Labor Day cut-off, though hours shorten. For open-water swimming, Boulder Beach on Lake Mead usually stays pleasantly warm for much of October.
Yes, over three days. The Smith Center and the 18b Arts District sit close together downtown and pair well on a First Friday evening, Ethel M fits a morning in Henderson, and Boulder Beach and Mount Charleston each need half a day by car in opposite directions from the Strip.
Book Smith Center performances ahead, as touring Broadway shows often sell out. Lake Mead National Recreation Area charges a vehicle fee at the entrance station, while Mount Charleston is free to drive and hike. The Ethel M factory tour and cactus garden are free, and First Friday costs nothing to walk.
Three of the five are free. Lake Mead charges about $25 (about €22) per vehicle for a seven-day pass, and Smith Center tickets vary widely by show. You will need a rental car or rideshare for Boulder Beach, Mount Charleston and Ethel M, which is the biggest cost after show tickets.
Las Vegas in October has plenty more beyond this guide, including the Strip classics, Halloween events, canyon hikes and day trips covered in our other Las Vegas guides, such as the Bellagio fountains, Sphere, Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire. Other options in Las Vegas in October are Vegas Golden Knights games at T-Mobile Arena and the Pinball Hall of Fame.
