Barbados is a coral island rather than a volcanic one, which gives it gentler terrain and a coastline of genuinely fine white sand. The two coasts are quite different: the sheltered west faces the Caribbean with calm swimming and the resort strip, while the Atlantic east at Bathsheba is wild, rocky and one of the region's serious surf breaks. Rum was invented here in the 1600s and Mount Gay claims to be the world's oldest distillery, the Friday night fish fry at Oistins is an institution, and Crop Over in summer is the island's carnival.

December to April is the dry season and peak period, with reliable sun and the lowest humidity. Crop Over, the island's carnival, builds through July and peaks with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday in August, which is the liveliest and most expensive summer week. Hurricane season runs June to November, though Barbados lies far enough east that direct hits are relatively rare. Surfers should note the Atlantic swell at Bathsheba is best from November to March.
The west coast, known as the Platinum Coast, has calm Caribbean water, the best swimming beaches and the luxury hotels around Holetown and Speightstown. The south coast around St Lawrence Gap is livelier and better value, with more restaurants, bars and a younger crowd, and decent swimming. The east coast at Bathsheba faces the Atlantic and is spectacular but has dangerous currents and is not for swimming. Most first-time visitors choose the west or south.
