Citizens of more than 100 countries, including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, receive a free visitor permit on arrival valid for up to four months, one of the most generous allowances anywhere. You will need a passport valid for six months, a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. Fiji has strict biosecurity controls, so declare any food, plant or wooden items on your arrival card.
May to October is the dry season and the best window, with lower humidity, temperatures around 25 to 28°C and the clearest water for diving. November to April is the wet season, hotter and more humid, and it is also cyclone season, with the highest risk between December and March. Prices drop noticeably in the wet months and rain often comes as short heavy bursts rather than all-day weather. Manta ray season at the Yasawas runs roughly May to October.
The Mamanucas are closest to Nadi, easily reached in under an hour by boat, and suit short stays, families and day trips. The Yasawas are further north, more dramatic and less developed, with backpacker lodges alongside luxury resorts, reached by the Yasawa Flyer catamaran. Taveuni, the garden island, is for divers wanting the Rainbow Reef and Great White Wall. The Coral Coast on Viti Levu is the easiest option if you would rather not take a boat at all.
Village visits are common and genuinely welcoming, but they follow real protocol rather than performance. Bring a sevusevu, traditionally a bundle of kava root, to present to the chief, and expect a kava ceremony where you clap once, drink the bowl in one, then clap three times. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove hats and sunglasses inside the village, and take your shoes off before entering a home. Ask before photographing people.
