Jamaica travel facts

Jamaica exerts a cultural influence far out of proportion to its size, having given the world reggae, ska, dancehall and Bob Marley, and the music is genuinely everywhere rather than staged for tourists. The north coast holds the resort towns of Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and the seven-mile beach at Negril with its cliff-top bars at Rick's Cafe. Inland, the Blue Mountains rise above 2,200 metres and produce some of the most expensive coffee in the world, while the Cockpit Country remains rugged Maroon territory.

Jamaica Travel FAQ

EU, UK, US, Canadian and Commonwealth passport holders do not need a visa and typically receive up to 90 days on arrival. You will need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and the address of where you are staying. An online immigration and customs form should be completed before arrival. Cruise passengers on day visits have simplified requirements.

December to April is the dry season and peak period, with warm sunshine and minimal rain, and it coincides with the busiest and most expensive weeks. Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay each July is the island's biggest music event and worth planning around if that is your interest. Hurricane season runs June to November, with the greatest risk in September and October. May and late November are good-value shoulder months with generally decent weather.

Montego Bay has the main international airport and the largest concentration of resorts, making it the easiest base for a short trip. Negril offers the famous seven-mile beach, cliff-top hotels and sunsets, with a more relaxed feel. Ocho Rios suits families and cruise-linked attractions like Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain. Port Antonio in the northeast is the least developed and most beautiful, and Kingston is for music history and city culture rather than beaches.

Resort areas in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios are heavily policed and most visits pass without problems, but Jamaica has a high national crime rate concentrated in specific urban areas away from tourism. Check your government's current advisory, which often names particular parishes to avoid. Practical steps: use licensed JUTA taxis rather than flagging cars, avoid walking on unlit beaches or streets at night, and be firm but polite with persistent vendors.
