North Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan country built around Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, whose shoreline town holds Byzantine churches, a hilltop fortress and beaches that feel oddly Mediterranean for somewhere 700 metres above sea level. Skopje in the north is a genuinely strange capital, its Ottoman bazaar sitting across the Vardar from a government-commissioned quarter of neoclassical facades and outsized statues. Add the Shar and Mavrovo mountains, Balkan food at a fraction of Western European prices, and one of the region's least crowded travel scenes.

Most Western nationalities can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, including EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders. Holders of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa can also enter without a separate Macedonian visa. North Macedonia is an EU candidate but not yet a member, so it sits outside the Schengen zone and your stay does not consume Schengen days.
June to September suits Lake Ohrid, when the water is warm enough to swim and the lakeside towns are lively, with July and August the busiest and priciest. May, September and October are ideal for Skopje and hiking in Mavrovo or the Shar mountains, avoiding the summer heat that regularly pushes past 35°C in the capital. Winter brings skiing at Mavrovo and Popova Shapka at very low prices by European standards.
North Macedonia is a safe destination with low violent crime and a strong tradition of hospitality towards visitors. Petty theft is uncommon but worth guarding against in Skopje's Old Bazaar and on crowded buses. The more realistic hazards are practical: taxi drivers who do not run the meter, poorly lit rural roads, and stray dogs in some areas. Agree taxi fares in advance or use a ride-hailing app, and drive carefully at night.
The Macedonian Denar (MKD) is the currency, running at roughly 61 to the Euro. Cards are accepted in Skopje and Ohrid hotels, supermarkets and larger restaurants, but cash remains essential for markets, small guesthouses, taxis and rural areas. Exchange offices in city centres usually offer better rates than airport counters or hotels. North Macedonia is among the cheapest countries in Europe, with restaurant meals and accommodation well below Western European levels.
Four to five days covers the highlights comfortably. Give Skopje one to two days for the Old Bazaar, Kale Fortress, Matka Canyon and the Millennium Cross, then three days around Lake Ohrid for the old town, Sveti Jovan Kaneo, the Bay of Bones and a boat trip. Add two more days if you want serious hiking in Mavrovo National Park or a detour to the Ottoman town of Bitola and the ruins at Heraclea Lyncestis.
