What happens if the crypto price moves between checkout and confirmation?
In short
- Nothing changes for you if you send within the payment window - the crypto amount was locked at checkout.
- If the network is slow and confirmation lands after the window expires, CoinGate may treat the payment as underpaid or overpaid based on the new rate.
- Choose a faster network - Lightning for BTC, or a Layer 2 like Arbitrum or Base for ETH and USDC - to avoid missing the window.
The rate is locked within the window
CoinGate quotes a fixed crypto amount at checkout and locks the rate for the payment window, usually 15 minutes. If you send the exact quoted amount and the transaction confirms in time, market movement doesn't affect the booking - the hotel still receives its full listed fiat price.
When the confirmation is late
Occasionally a network is congested and your transaction confirms after the window closes. Two things can happen.
Payment marked as underpaid
If the crypto price dropped between checkout and confirmation, the fiat value CoinGate receives may be less than the quoted total. The system holds the booking for review and asks you to top up the difference.
Payment marked as overpaid
If the crypto price rose, the received fiat value exceeds the quoted total. CoinGate typically credits or refunds the excess according to its policy.
Important: Sending from a slow network during high congestion is the main reason payments miss the window. Choose Lightning for Bitcoin or a Layer 2 (Arbitrum, Base, Polygon) for Ethereum and USDC to confirm in seconds.
What to do if your booking isn't confirmed
If your booking isn't confirmed because of a delayed transaction, contact trip1 support with your booking reference and transaction hash. We can work with CoinGate to reconcile the payment.
