Proof of accommodation is evidence that you have somewhere to stay for the whole time you are in the country. Consulates ask for it in visa applications, and border officers sometimes ask for it on arrival, usually along with a return ticket.
The point is to show you are a genuine visitor with a plan rather than someone arriving with nowhere to go. A confirmed booking made on trip1 answers that in one page, because it names the guest, the property, the address and the exact dates.
What makes a booking acceptable
Not every booking confirmation passes. Check yours against this list before you submit anything.
- The guest name matches your passport exactly, including middle names and spelling
- The property's full street address, city and country appear, not just the city
- Check-in and check-out dates line up with your flights and cover the entire stay
- A booking reference number the property can look up if anyone calls
- The status says confirmed, not pending, provisional or on request
- Every traveller in the group is named, or each person carries their own confirmation
If you married, changed your name, or booked before renewing your passport, fix the name on the booking first. A mismatch between the booking and the passport is the most common reason a document gets questioned.
Multi-city trips
You need continuous coverage with no unexplained gaps. Bring one confirmation per city and make sure each check-out date meets the next check-in date.

Plenty of sites suggest making a refundable booking just for the paperwork and cancelling it once the visa arrives. That is document fraud, not a travel hack, and it is worth being blunt about.
Important: Consulates and border officers do verify bookings, by calling the property or checking the reference, and a cancelled reservation shows up immediately. A refusal recorded for a false document follows you into every future visa application, in that country and often in others.
If your plans really are unsettled, book accommodation you genuinely intend to use and pick a rate whose cancellation terms you can live with. The document is only worth anything if it describes a stay that will actually happen.
How to carry it
Save the confirmation as a PDF on your phone so it opens without a signal, and print one copy for your bag.
