Cortina d'Ampezzo lies at 1,224 metres in the Ampezzo valley, ringed by the pale limestone walls of the Dolomites - Tofane, Cristallo, Faloria and Sorapis. It is a town of roughly 5,700 residents in the province of Belluno, Veneto, and it has been Italy's flagship mountain resort since it hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics. The surrounding Dolomites became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

Cortina co-hosted the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in February 2026, staging the women's alpine skiing on the Olympia delle Tofane and the sliding events at the rebuilt Eugenio Monti track. The Olympia delle Tofane returned to public skiing in March 2026. Winter is the main season, with 120 kilometres of local piste and access to the wider Dolomiti Superski network of more than 1,200 kilometres. Summer brings via ferrata routes, the Cinque Torri open-air Great War museum and high-altitude refuges.

There is no railway station in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Most visitors arrive by Cortina Express or ATVO coach from Venice Marco Polo Airport in about two hours, or by Dolomitibus from Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore, the nearest railhead. The town centre is walkable and closed to through traffic along Corso Italia, and free ski buses connect the lift bases in winter. Prices sit at the upper end for Italy, particularly during February and the Christmas fortnight.
