Hotels near Barceloneta Beach

Barceloneta is the city beach closest to the old town, a strip of sand running from the W Hotel sail to the Olympic Port, backed by the Passeig Marítim promenade. In summer it is shoulder to shoulder; by October the crowds thin sharply while the water stays around 21 to 22°C in the first half of the month, warm enough for a proper swim.

Lifeguard cover and beach services are cut back once the summer season ends, so check flags and swim near a staffed post. Quieter beaches lie further north: Nova Icària and Bogatell, 20 minutes' walk along the promenade, are wider and calmer, with chiringuito beach bars that stay open on sunny weekends.

Barceloneta itself, the old fishermen's quarter behind the beach, is the place for a seafood lunch: arròs negre, fideuà and grilled sardines in the narrow grid of streets around the Mercat de la Barceloneta.

Pro Tip: Swim between 13:00 and 16:00 in the first two weeks of October, then walk north to Bogatell for sunset drinks. Keep bags close on the sand at Barceloneta, where petty theft is common.
