Southwark Street, London SE1 1TL, UK
Borough Market has traded beside London Bridge in some form for around a thousand years and is London's best-known food market, with more than a hundred stalls under Victorian iron and glass roofs. October is one of its strongest months, as British autumn produce arrives: game such as pheasant and venison, heritage apples and pears, squash, wild mushrooms and the new season's cheeses.
Hot food stalls serve everything from raclette to scotch eggs, and many trade from Tuesday to Sunday, with the full market running later in the week. It gets extremely crowded at weekend lunchtimes, so weekdays are more comfortable. The covered sections make it a reliable plan when showers pass through.
Southwark Cathedral sits right beside the market and is free to visit.
Pro Tip: Arrive around 11:00 on a Wednesday or Thursday, graze your way around the stalls before the office lunch rush, and buy British apple varieties you will not find in supermarkets.
