Hotels near Day Trip to Sopot and Malbork Castle

Two very different day trips are equally easy from Gdansk Glowny station. Sopot is the classic Baltic spa town, 25 minutes away by SKM commuter train. The 511-metre wooden Molo pier - the longest of its kind in Europe - is the main draw, along with 4 kilometres of sandy beach, the crooked house on Bohaterow Monte Cassino street, and Grand Hotel Sopot where Charles de Gaulle and Marlene Dietrich once stayed. Sopot is at its best on a sunny weekday morning; on summer weekends it heaves with Warsaw daytrippers.
The heavier historical trip is Malbork Castle, the largest brick castle in the world by land area at 21 hectares, built by the Teutonic Order between 1274 and the late 14th century as their new headquarters. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the castle is divided into three sections - Low, Middle, and High Castle - with the Grand Master's Palace, an octagonal chapter house, and the reconstructed St Mary's Church all worth the full timed visit. Allow at least four hours on site plus travel.
Pro Tip: Book the standard Malbork ticket with English audio guide online at bilety.zamek.malbork.pl the night before - the queue at the ticket office can exceed 45 minutes in July. Take the 08:30 or 09:00 train from Gdansk Glowny to be first through the main gate when it opens at 09:00.
