The El Rey Archaeological Zone is the largest Maya site within Cancún itself - a compact set of temples, platforms and a small pyramid dating from around 1200 to 1500 CE. Once a coastal trading and fishing settlement, it takes about 45 minutes to explore along raised walkways. The stars of the show are the resident iguanas, which bask by the hundreds on the warm stones. Sitting between the beach and the lagoon, it is an easy add-on to a Hotel Zone day and rarely crowded.
Pro Tip: Go early or late to dodge the midday heat, bring water and cash for the small entry fee, and watch your step - the iguanas own the place.
