Hai Van Pass climbs to 496 metres over a spur of the Truong Son range and marks a genuine climate boundary - Da Nang can sit in full sun while Hue, on the far side, is under rain. Its 21 km of switchbacks carried all north-south traffic until the Hai Van Tunnel opened in 2005, which is precisely why the road is now quiet enough to enjoy. At the top stands Hai Van Quan, a Nguyen dynasty gate from 1826, restored and reopened to visitors in 2024.

Most travellers ride the pass by motorbike between Da Nang and Hue, with luggage sent separately by car. Fog is the real risk here. Visibility can collapse to 20 metres with no warning, the surface stays wet under cloud, and the drop on the seaward side is unforgiving. Mornings before 10:00 are usually the clearest window, and the restored gate complex charges a small admission at the ticket booth on the summit.

Pro Tip: Ask your driver to check cloud at the summit before you commit. If Hai Van Quan is fogged in there is nothing to see, and the tunnel route saves an hour. Stop at the lay-by on the Da Nang side for the Lang Co lagoon view.
