Rennweg 3, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria
The Karrinne, listed by the lift company as the Hafelekarrinne, is the reason expert skiers fly into Innsbruck rather than driving past it. The route drops off the ridge below Hafelekar, the 2,269-metre top station of the Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen, and funnels down to the Seegrube at 1,905 metres. Innsbruck Tourismus puts the gradient at 70 percent, which makes it one of the steepest lift-served descents in Europe. Nothing here is groomed. The avalanche commission of the city of Innsbruck and the Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen assess the snowpack every morning, and the operator expects a transceiver, a partner and a call to the snow hotline on +43 512 29334415 before anyone commits.
Reaching the start takes about 20 minutes from the Old Town. The Hungerburgbahn funicular leaves the Congress station on Rennweg, then the Seegrubenbahn and Hafelekarbahn cable cars finish the climb. Winter 2026/27 runs from 20 November 2026 to 25 April 2027. An adult Innsbruck to Hafelekar return costs 56.00 EUR, children 33.60 EUR. Conditions and access are set out on the Innsbruck Tourismus freeride pages.
Pro Tip: Ring the Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen snow hotline on +43 512 29334415 the evening before, then inspect the Karrinne entrance from the Hafelekar viewing platform before you drop in. If the traverse looks wind-scoured, ski the Seegrube pistes and come back after the next snowfall.
