The Quai des Délices is the gourmet market of the Strasbourg Christmas season, set on the terrace of the Palais Rohan by the River Ill and on Place du Marché-aux-Poissons. It is where to come hungry. Alsatian winemakers pour on the Rohan terrace, local bakers run a pop-up bakehouse, and the fish-market square serves savoury dishes and beer.

Look out for the Tribu des Gourmets stall, which serves mulled wine made with Alsatian white wine rather than red, a regional speciality that many visitors miss. Last year the bakers also ran bredele-making sessions on Wednesdays, which needed booking in advance.

The setting is one of the best in the city, with the cathedral rising behind the 18th-century Palais Rohan and the river lights reflecting below. It is a good place for a slow lunch rather than a quick snack.

Pro Tip: Order a vin chaud blanc (white mulled wine) and a slice of kougelhopf, the ring-shaped Alsatian brioche, and eat it on the terrace overlooking the river.
