R. do Aljube, São Martinho, 9000-067 Funchal, Portugal
The Missas do Parto are a uniquely Madeiran tradition: a series of dawn masses held in churches across the island in the nine days before Christmas, from 16 to 24 December. After each mass, locals gather outside the church to sing, play traditional music and share food and drink.
In Funchal, the masses at the Sé Cathedral attract large crowds, and the celebrations afterwards are lively, with poncha, sandwiches and festive songs. In 2025, the mass at the cathedral began at 7.30am.
The tradition gives visitors a chance to experience a local Christmas custom that has been practised for generations.
Pro Tip: Get up early to attend a Missa do Parto at the Sé Cathedral, then stay for the music and celebrations outside. Check the church timetable for 2026.
