Hotels near Noite do Mercado

The Noite do Mercado (Market Night), held every year on 23 December, is the highlight of Christmas in Madeira for many locals. People from across the island come to Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores, the historic farmers' market, to do their Christmas shopping and celebrate late into the night.

The market and surrounding streets fill with music, stalls and food, including sandwiches of carne de vinha d'alhos (pork marinated in wine and garlic), a Madeiran Christmas speciality. The 2026 Market Night takes place on 23 December, according to Visit Portugal.

Smaller Market Nights are held in other towns across the island in the days before. It is the most authentic way to experience Christmas in Madeira.

Pro Tip: Arrive early in the evening to explore the market before the biggest crowds arrive, and try a carne de vinha d'alhos sandwich with a glass of poncha.
