Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) is the oldest part of Wrocław, home to the Gothic Cathedral of St John the Baptist and a cluster of churches. Its streets are still lit by more than 100 gas lamps, which a lamplighter in a traditional cape lights by hand every evening at dusk.

In winter, the lighting of the lamps happens in the late afternoon, and the quiet, cobbled streets make a peaceful contrast to the busy Christmas market. The cathedral tower has a viewing terrace with views over the Old Town.

The walk from the Rynek crosses the Tumski Bridge, decorated with padlocks left by couples.
