Phang Nga Bay, north-east of Phuket, contains over 40 limestone karst islands rising sheer from emerald water - one of the most distinctive seascapes in South-east Asia. The protected national marine park (entry 300 THB) includes hidden lagoons (Hong Islands), sea caves passable only at low tide, mangrove channels, and the floating Muslim village of Koh Panyee built on stilts over the water.
Day tours from Phuket combine long-tail and speedboat sections, sea kayaking through caves, and lunch at Koh Panyee village. Departures from Bang Rong or Ao Po piers north-east of Phuket. Trip duration 8-9 hours. Standard tour 1500-3000 THB per person; specialist sea-kayak tours 3000-4500 THB. The most famous stop is James Bond Island (see next attraction). November-April for the calmest seas.
