Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the most popular beach destination in the country. The west coast strings together long-running resort areas - Patong for nightlife, Karon and Kata for families, Surin and Bang Tao for upmarket stays, and quieter beaches further south like Nai Harn.

Beyond the beach itself, Phuket serves as the launch point for the Andaman Sea: speedboat and ferry trips to Phi Phi, James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay, the Similan Islands, and the Krabi coast. Old Phuket Town, with its painted Sino-Portuguese shophouses and Sunday Walking Street, is the cultural heart of the island and a worthwhile half-day on its own.
