Phuket Old Town occupies several blocks of Thalang, Dibuk, Krabi, and Soi Romanee streets in the eastern inland Phuket Town - a 19th-century Sino-Portuguese trading quarter built when Hokkien Chinese tin-mining merchants made the island wealthy. The pastel-coloured shophouses with arcades and shuttered windows follow Penang and Singapore styles. Most buildings now house cafes, design shops, and small museums.
Highlights include Soi Romanee (the most photographed pastel street), the Thai Hua Museum (a former Chinese language school explaining Phuket's tin-mining history, 200 THB), the Sunday walking street (Lard Yai, 16:00-22:00 from Thalang Road), and the Hokkien shrine to Pa Tu Ti at the temple corner. Allow 3 hours for a slow walk with lunch. Many shops close Mondays. Cheap by Phuket standards: street food 60-100 THB.
Pro Tip: Visit on a Sunday from 16:00 for the Lard Yai walking street - the Old Town's streets close to traffic and pop-up food stalls fill the pavements. The mee Hokkien (local Hokkien noodle) at Mee Ton Poe on Phuket Road has operated since 1947 and is the local specialty.
