Gral. Bartolomé Mitre 375, B1648 Tigre, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Parana Delta begins about 28 km north of the city, where the river breaks into thousands of wooded islands laced with brown channels. Tigre is the town on its edge and the jumping-off point. Around 3,000 people live out on the islands with no roads at all, so everything arrives by boat: the school run, the grocery launch, the post. Public launches leave the Estacion Fluvial on scheduled routes to island jetties, cost a few euros, and are far better value than the hour-long tourist catamarans docked alongside them.
In Tigre itself the Puerto de Frutos market sells wicker, furniture and cheap souvenirs, while the Museo de Arte Tigre occupies a 1912 riverside social club worth the entry fee for the building alone. Out on the islands you will find riverside parrillas, swimming spots and old rowing clubs. The water runs silt-brown from sediment rather than pollution. Go on a weekday if you can, because Sunday brings half the city and the launches run full.
Pro Tip: Buy a return ticket on an Interisleña or Lineas Delta public launch to a stop about 40 minutes out, get off, eat lunch at a riverside parrilla and catch a later boat back. Note the return timetable when you board, because services thin sharply after 17:00.
