Vondelpark is Amsterdam's largest city-centre park, opened in 1865 and laid out in English landscape style with ponds, winding paths and around 47 hectares of lawns and woodland. It is where Amsterdammers jog, cycle and walk their dogs, and in late October its oaks, beeches and plane trees turn it into the best place in the city for autumn colour.
The park runs about 1.5 km from the Leidseplein end to the Amstelveenseweg, and a full loop takes under an hour at a stroll. The Blauwe Theehuis, a round 1930s modernist tea house by the pond, and the terrace of Groot Melkhuis are the classic stops for coffee. On marathon Sunday, 18 October, runners pass through the park, so paths are busy that morning.
It pairs naturally with the Museum Quarter next door, making it the perfect break between two museum visits.
Pro Tip: Visit on a dry weekday morning in the last ten days of October for the strongest colours and fewest people, then walk out through the Overtoom gate for breakfast. Watch for cyclists on the main paths, who have priority in practice.
