Wat Chalong (officially Wat Chaiyathararam) is Phuket's largest and most visited Buddhist temple, founded in the early 19th century. The 60-metre 3-storey grand pagoda (Phra Mahathat Chedi) was completed in 2011 and contains a fragment of bone from the historical Buddha. Visitors can climb to the 3rd floor for views over the temple complex and surrounding hills. The temple was the centre of the 1876 Chinese mining-coolie revolt against Phuket authorities, and 2 monks are still venerated for negotiating the peace.

The complex contains 4 separate buildings: the grand pagoda, the main viharn (hall) with golden Buddha statues, a smaller chapel with wax figures of the revered monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, and a fortune-telling pavilion. Free admission; donations welcomed. Dress code applies (covered shoulders and knees, sarongs at the gate). Open daily 07:00-17:00. Allow 90 minutes.

Pro Tip: Combine Wat Chalong with Big Buddha on the same morning - the temples are 7 km apart and both are best visited before midday heat. The temple sells red firework strings (100 THB) that pilgrims light to thank the Buddha for wishes granted - join in if you like, it is a fun local tradition.
