Qatar is a small Gulf peninsula built around Doha, where the Museum of Islamic Art, the restored Souq Waqif and the Corniche skyline sit within a few kilometres of each other. Beyond the capital the country is desert — the inland sea at Khor Al Adaid, dune camps, and the coastal fort at Al Zubarah. Citizens of more than 100 countries can enter Qatar visa-free or receive a visa waiver on arrival. EU and UK passport holders get 90 days within a 180-day period, while US, Canadian and Australian visitors typically receive 30 days. You need a passport valid for six months and confirmed accommodation.
November to March is the only comfortable window for visiting Qatar. Daytime temperatures sit around 20-28°C and evenings are pleasant for the Corniche and outdoor dining. From May to September the heat regularly exceeds 40°C with high humidity, and most activity moves indoors.
Qatar has one of the lowest crime rates in the world and is very safe for visitors, including solo travellers. Local laws are strict, however — public intoxication, drugs and public displays of affection carry serious penalties, and modest dress is expected in public spaces. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel venues.
Qatar uses the Qatari Riyal (QAR), which is pegged to the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though small amounts of cash are useful at Souq Waqif stalls and for taxi drivers. ATMs are plentiful throughout Doha.
