Belgrade is Serbia's boisterous, big-hearted capital — a city built at the meeting of the Sava and Danube where centuries of Ottoman, Habsburg, and Yugoslav history collide in fortress walls, brutalist blocks, and Belle Époque facades. May, June, and September offer the best weather for Belgrade, with warm days, cool evenings for outdoor bars, and lower prices than peak July. Summer weekends bring the floating splavovi clubs into full swing, and December is festive but cold.
Bus A1 (300 RSD) runs from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) to Slavija Square in about 30 minutes. Public bus 72 is cheaper but slower, while a metered taxi with an official airport voucher costs a flat rate of around 1,800-2,200 RSD depending on your zone.
Central Belgrade is walkable, and buses, trams, and trolleys run frequently with a BusPlus card bought at kiosks. For evenings, taxi apps like CarGo and Yandex Go are safer and cheaper than street taxis, which have a bad reputation for overcharging tourists.
Two to three days is plenty for Belgrade's fortress, main museums, Skadarlija, and a proper night out on the splavovi. Add a day for Novi Sad (1h by bus) or Zemun for its Danube waterfront and fisherman's restaurants.
Belgrade is safe for tourists, with low violent crime and locals generally happy to help visitors. The main hazards are taxi scams at the airport and pickpocketing in busy pedestrian areas, so use CarGo/Yandex Go and keep valuables secure.
