Events in Rio de Janeiro: what to know
Carnival has two halves that pull in different directions. The parades are ticketed and held at the Sambadrome in Cidade Nova, near Praça Onze on the metro, finishing in the early morning.
The blocos are free street parties spread across Ipanema, Copacabana, Lapa and Santa Teresa. Most visitors base themselves in the South Zone and travel in for the parades, which is why Copacabana and Ipanema book out furthest ahead.
