About Rio Carnival 2027
Rio Carnival 2027 runs from 5 February through the Champions' Parade on 13 February. The centrepiece is the Sambadrome Marques de Sapucai: the Serie Ouro schools parade on 5-6 February, and the elite Grupo Especial takes over on 7-9 February with the spectacle the carnival is famous for.
Away from the Sambadrome, the real scale of carnival is on the streets: hundreds of free blocos - roving street parties with their own bands - fill every neighbourhood from early morning until night, from Centro and Lapa to the beach districts.
Copacabana and Ipanema keep you close to the beach and the biggest blocos, with the metro running through the night on parade dates for the ride to the Sambadrome. Santa Teresa and Lapa put you near the samba heart of the city. It is Rio's busiest week of the year - hotels sell out months ahead and minimum-stay rules are common.
