Carr. de Cala Conta, 07829 Sant Antoni de Portmany, Illes Balears, Spain
Cala Bassa is a west-coast cove about 6 km south of San Antonio with water colour that stands alongside Cala Conta as the best on the island - a horseshoe of pale turquoise sheltered by rocky headlands, with a pine-forested hillside behind. For couples, it's the more intimate alternative to Cala Conta: smaller, slightly harder to reach, and with a character that feels less packaged than the larger west coast beaches. The water is shallow and clear over white sand, and the beach faces southwest giving excellent afternoon light.
Cala Bassa Beach Club (Cala Bassa s/n) operates a beach club with sunloungers, a restaurant, and a pool; prices reflect the setting. The public beach sand is always free and you can bring your own food and drinks. A seasonal boat service runs from San Antonio port (roughly every 30 minutes in summer, about 15 EUR return) and is a far more enjoyable way to arrive than the road - the approach by sea through the rocky headlands is one of the better coastal moments on the island.
Pro Tip: Take the boat from San Antonio to arrive and swim during the afternoon, then catch a later return crossing that lines up with the sunset seen from the water on the way back. The angle of light on the western sea at around 7 PM in summer, seen from the boat heading back to San Antonio, gives one of the best free views of the day.
