Events in Cologne: what to know
Koelnmesse is in Deutz on the right bank, with Köln Messe/Deutz station at the door and the cathedral a 15 minute walk across the Hohenzollern bridge. Deutz puts you closest to the halls; the Altstadt side is that walk away and has more open in the evening.
Trade-fair weeks are the peak of the Cologne hotel calendar and gamescom is the biggest of them, so this is not a late booking.
