The Little Carpathians (Male Karpaty) wine region is Slovakia's largest and oldest, running 80 kilometres north-east from Bratislava along the sunny south-facing slopes of the mountains. Grape growing on this ridge goes back to Celtic and Roman times and was industrialised by the German colonists that Hungarian kings brought in during the 13th century. Today the region covers 5,000 hectares of vineyards across 60 villages, best known for Gruner Veltliner, Welschriesling and the local speciality Devin (a Traminer-Roter Veltliner cross).
The three key wine towns are Raca (a Bratislava suburb accessible by tram 3), Pezinok (25 minutes by train, home to the Slovak Wine Museum at Radnicne namestie 9 and the annual Vinobranie harvest festival every second weekend of September), and Modra (45 minutes by bus, known for its blue-glaze ceramics and the Elesko winery). The signposted Little Carpathians Wine Route links all three by road and marked hiking trails. Cerveny Kamen castle at Casta, 30 km north-east of Bratislava, makes a good half-day extension by bus 520 from Mlynske nivy terminal.
Pro Tip: Time your visit for the third weekend in November for Den otvorenych pivnic (Open Cellar Day) when 130+ Little Carpathians wineries open their doors for a single 15 EUR wristband. Otherwise book a Sunday tasting at Elesko in Modra or Zapadny Slovakia in Pezinok two days ahead - most cellars close Monday and Tuesday.
