Devin Castle (Devinsky hrad) sits on a 212-metre volcanic crag exactly where the Morava river meets the Danube - the Slovak side of the border with Austria. The ruins go back to a Celtic hillfort of the 1st century BC, followed by Roman military watchpost, and its heyday came as the fortress of the Great Moravian Empire in the 9th century. Napoleon's troops blew it up in 1809 and it has stood as a picturesque ruin ever since - the classic silhouette of Slovak national identity.
The site is a designated National Cultural Monument. You climb through three levels: the lower bailey with the exhibition halls (Great Moravian jewellery and Roman finds), the middle bailey with the barrel-vaulted well 55 metres deep, and the upper castle with the iconic Maiden Tower (Panenska veza) perched on a separate rock spike. Opening hours are April-October Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-17:00 (extended to 18:00 in June-August), closed November-March. Admission is 5 EUR for adults, 3 EUR concession.
Pro Tip: Take bus 29 from Most SNP right after breakfast, spend 2 hours at the castle, then eat lunch at Reserva restaurant beneath the castle on the village square before catching bus 29 back. In summer, the boat cruise Devin (from Bratislava passenger port) is a lovely alternative return route with the castle framed from the river.
