851 01 Petržalka, Slovakia
The UFO Bridge (officially Most Slovenskeho narodneho povstania, or Most SNP) is Bratislava's most controversial landmark and its best panoramic viewpoint. The 431-metre asymmetric cable-stayed bridge was completed in 1972 during the Communist era and demolished a third of the Jewish quarter and the medieval synagogue to make room. On top of the 85-metre pylon on the south bank sits the flying-saucer-shaped restaurant and observation deck that gives the bridge its nickname.
A single high-speed elevator inside the pylon reaches the observation deck in 45 seconds. Opening hours are 10:00-23:00 daily and admission is 6.50 EUR - the fee is waived if you book a table in the UFO restaurant. From 85 metres up you can see the entire city, the confluence of the Morava and the Danube at Devin Castle 10 km to the west, and on clear days the Little Carpathians and Austria. The bridge's pedestrian walkway underneath connects the Old Town to Petrzalka in about 8 minutes.
Pro Tip: Come at 21:00 in summer when the city is lit and the observation deck has almost no queue. Buying a drink at the UFO bar counts as restaurant patronage and refunds the observation fee. In winter avoid windy days - the deck sways noticeably above 60 km/h wind.
