Kenya Travel FAQ
Most nationalities need an electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya, which costs around USD 30 and is applied for online before travel. The old visa-on-arrival system has been phased out, so plan to have your eTA approved before booking flights.
July to October is peak safari season, especially for the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. January and February also offer excellent wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. The long rains (March-May) and short rains (November-December) bring greener landscapes but some lodge closures.
Most tourist areas in Kenya - safari parks, the Maasai Mara, Diani, and central Nairobi business districts - are safe with reasonable precautions. Avoid the Somali border, parts of the northeast, and walk with awareness in downtown Nairobi after dark. Booking with reputable operators is the simplest safety measure.
Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES). US dollars are widely accepted for safari fees and park entry, while M-Pesa mobile money is dominant locally. Carry small-denomination notes, and note that USD bills should be from 2013 or newer.
